About the Coalition: Securing Indigenous Peoples’ Rights in the Green Economy

The Securing Indigenous Peoples’ Rights in the Green Economy (SIRGE) Coalition implements transformative solutions to secure the rights of Indigenous Peoples in the global transition to a green economy. With respect to the transition mineral supply chain, SIRGE Coalition focuses on the urgent need to operationalize Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) as enumerated in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

To do this, SIRGE Coalition will:

  • Center Indigenous Peoples’ leadership, solutions, and voices.

  • Champion Indigenous Peoples’ self-determined priorities in the green economy

  • Enact policies for the green economy that include FPIC as a safeguard of the rights of Indigenous Peoples.

  • Compel companies – including automakers, battery producers, technology, finance, insurance, and mining companies – to implement respect for Indigenous Peoples’ rights throughout their supply chains.

  • Ensure that Indigenous communities have the resources and power to pursue their self-identified priorities in the green economy.

Batani Foundation

The International Indigenous Foundation for Development and Solidarity «Batani» was created as an initiative of Indigenous Peoples in 2004 to organize development projects for Indigenous Peoples in Russia. It has implemented several successful programs of Indigenous Peoples’ economic development in Primorsky Region, Sakhalin, and other regions of the Russian Far East. The Foundation also developed tools and mechanisms for negotiations between Indigenous communities and private businesses and promoted international cooperation between indigenous peoples of Russia, the US, Canada, Norway, Bolivia, and other countries.

Earthworks

Since 1988, Earthworks has helped communities secure protections of their health, land, water, and air from extractive industries. We are the only national organization in the U.S. to focus exclusively on preventing the destructive impacts of the extraction of oil, gas, and minerals.

Earthworks protects communities and the environment from the adverse impacts of mineral and energy development while promoting sustainable solutions. We’re driven by our commitment to collaborate with communities on the frontline, using science in innovative ways, and building people power to ensure a more just and livable future.
